The standard intake process is wrapped into the usual initial evaluation. During a regular physiotherapy assessment, you can expect to have the quality and quantity of motion assessed via range of motion, orthopaedic, neurological and palpation examinations. It is at this time that the clinical acupuncture system can be recommended. The information provided from the combination of clinical examination findings and the expressed individual needs of the patient allow for the appropriate inclusion of acupuncture as a complimentary experience, along with patient-centered chiropractic care. The acupuncture sessions themselves can work as a standalone treatment or in conjunction with other therapies as part of a larger treatment plan.
Acupuncture is a safe and effective therapy, which can be used to treat a variety of issues from very specific biomechanical issues, such as acute or overuse injuries sustained with training, to broad based problems such as chronic pains, tightness from stress or postural strain and even frequent headaches.
However, for those patients who are uncomfortable around the idea of being needled – you can rest assured that these are very small and very safe. Acupuncture needles are usually a fraction of the size of hypodermic needles, which are utilized in the doctor’s office regularly. While you may expect this experience to feel painful or uncomfortable, the reality is that many patients do not feel any pain or discomfort at all.
Through mechanical stimulation of the nearby nerves and blood vessels, acupuncturists are able to have a direct output on the nervous system and circulatory system. The benefits of clinical acupuncture can be felt immediately in many people, but will often develop over the next 24 hours in most patients. You can expect that there will be a noticeable decrease in aches and pains, as well as a reduction in muscle tension. After a long day in the office, who couldn’t use more of that?
